The heartbreaking pilot [ Letter Index ]

I am a pilot, 50, who has just retired. Travelling, during my life, I have gathered great human experience and material. Therefore, I wish to discredit the common place of the so called sexual tourist, who more than being moved by a purely sexual aim, (in Italy anyway prostitution offers quite a lot), frequently establish sentimental relations with women whose main interest is to emerge from a state of misery and poverty in which they live in. What I do not understand is why are they not brought into suspicion by the fact that in certain underdeveloped environments they suddenly become heartbreakers? I remember that young man who married a girl from San Domingo that worked in night clubs. He left his job, sold his apartment to move to San Domingo with her and, once he got to the airport, found her lover, an accomplice. ready to kill him and grab all the money he had brought. We are talking about prostitutes. Why are so many men so childish to think they have found the woman of their lives. I confess that I also have risked getting too much involved.

It's a "Pretty Woman" like story. A wealthy man takes a prostitute off the street, offers her a fairy-tale like existence, light years away from the ghetto and the bleakness she lives in. Money is not enough. "I want a dream ", says the main character in pretty woman. Dreams are just like fairy tales, marrying Prince Charming. It is a fairy tale, a female dream. but also a male one. To turn a poor being into a goddess Is a creation of yours. And if you've created her, she belongs to you. On the other hand, when the principal need Is that of emerging from a state of poverty, the redeemer may be con fused with the Charming Prince and falling in love with radical change, possibility of an extraordinary life and of a great occasion. Both him and her may fall into illusion even because trips hide the ingredient of romanticism, emotion and adventure.
Moreover, there is, among many men, an atavistic belief, bound to the maleprotector role, which grants money an almost magical power, which is the solution to everything.
It cannot be denied that sometimes, it is a seductive weapon and also a great key to open doors. But after that, what you really are, matters.
